Rainwater harvesting and the Pothole
We had a great session yesterday on rainwater harvesting with Captain Lobo, Abhinav Apte and Romaine San Francesco.
Having been interested in solving the menace of potholes, extensive research, showed that the main cause of potholes in India, is the collection of water.
Water which falls on the earth, was supposed to be either absorbed by plants, or be given a path to the water table, via wells.
The water which falls on the road, should have been drained into nearby gutters and filtered off into the water table.
This begs the question, why does the water stay on the road?
Here lies the need for a natural run-off, or slope which should allow the water to easily drain off.
If the water is able to flow off easily into a drain, then the drain should take the water directly to the water table.
Therefore the reason for potholes, is the collection of water on the road.
So just filling a pothole, means that it will appear again, as the conditions which created the pothole in the first place still exist.
